How to choose
Start with what you want to see from the terrace and what you want to walk to. Dubai is spread out, so it pays to pick the area that matches most of your plans: the beach, the Burj or business meetings.
Dubai Marina
Dubai Marina is a man-made canal lined with residential towers, a short walk from JBR beach. It has more high-floor apartments than almost anywhere in the city, so penthouses here usually look over the water, the Palm or the open sea. Good for: Groups who want restaurants, the marina promenade and the beach on foot, and anyone going to Expo City or Dubai Harbour.
Downtown Dubai
Downtown Dubai is built around Burj Khalifa, Burj Lake and the Dubai Fountain, with Dubai Mall and Dubai Opera on its edges. High floors here look straight at the Burj or down on the fountain shows. Good for: First-time visitors, shoppers, and New Year's Eve, when the Burj Khalifa fireworks are right outside.
Palm Jumeirah
Palm Jumeirah is the palm-shaped island off Jumeirah. Apartment towers line the trunk, private villas fill the fronds and the big resorts, including both Atlantis hotels, sit on the outer crescent. Good for: Families and groups who want a beach, a pool and a resort feel, and the biggest choice of 4-bedroom stays.
JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence)
JBR is a strip of beachfront towers between Dubai Marina and the sea, facing Bluewaters island and Ain Dubai. The Walk and the beach are at the bottom of the buildings. Good for: Beach holidays with children, and larger older-style apartments, including duplex penthouses.
Business Bay
Business Bay runs along the Dubai Water Canal next to Downtown. Many towers have direct views of Burj Khalifa, often for less than the same view from Downtown itself. Good for: Value-minded groups who still want Burj views, and visitors to DIFC, DWTC, Meydan or Coca-Cola Arena.
Dubai Creek and Creek Harbour
The Creek area covers the newer towers of Dubai Creek Harbour and the older waterfront around the creek. From the harbour, high floors look back across the water to the Downtown skyline. Good for: Quieter stays close to the airport, d3, the tennis stadium and Festival City.
Sheikh Zayed Road
The towers along Sheikh Zayed Road between Trade Centre and DIFC are some of Dubai's oldest high-rises, with the metro running in front of them. Good for: Business trips to DWTC and DIFC, and the Museum of the Future.
