Why a penthouse beats the crowds
On 31 December the streets around Burj Khalifa fill up hours before midnight. Roads close in phases from the afternoon, Dubai Mall metro station closes early, and getting out afterwards can take a long time. Watching from your own terrace means no queues, your own food and drinks, and a sofa when the show is over.
Last New Year Dubai had 48 fireworks displays at 40 locations, from Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab to Atlantis, Dubai Frame, Global Village and Expo City. So whichever area you stay in, there is something to watch.
Burj Khalifa: Downtown and Business Bay
The main show is launched from Burj Khalifa itself, with lights, lasers and drones. The best seats are apartments in Downtown, including the Opera District and the towers around the Dubai Fountain lake, and the Business Bay towers along the canal that face the Burj.
- Ask the host which way the balcony faces: "Burj view" can mean a side view from a bedroom.
- Higher floors see over the other towers. Look for photos taken from the balcony at night.
- If you are inside the closure zone, plan to be home by early evening. Some buildings issue wristbands or resident passes, so ask the host.

Across the water: Dubai Creek Harbour
From Dubai Creek Harbour you see the Burj Khalifa fireworks across the creek with the whole Downtown skyline in the frame, and Creek Harbour usually has fireworks of its own. It is calmer, and taxis are easier afterwards.
Over the sea: the Palm, the Marina and JBR
Fireworks are also set off along the coast: at Atlantis The Palm, Atlantis The Royal, Burj Al Arab, Bluewaters and The Beach at JBR. A penthouse on the Palm crescent, on the Marina waterfront or in the JBR towers facing the sea can see several shows at once.
Booking tips for 31 December
- Book three to six months ahead. Large apartments with a direct view go first.
- Expect a minimum stay of three to five nights and a higher nightly rate over New Year.
- Choose free cancellation when you can, then lock it in once flights are booked.
- Check the house rules: most buildings don't allow parties, extra guests or loud music on balconies.
- Holiday homes must register every guest with a passport or Emirates ID, so have copies ready.
