Villa, penthouse or hotel suite?
A villa gives you the pool, a garden and usually a beach on the Palm Jumeirah fronds, with space for big families. A penthouse puts a smaller pool on a terrace high above the Marina or the Palm, with the view as the main event. A hotel suite with its own pool, such as the Signature Penthouses at Atlantis The Royal, adds a concierge, restaurants and the resort’s beach, at a far higher nightly rate.
Is the pool heated?
From December to February the water in an unheated outdoor pool can feel cold, especially in the evening. If you are travelling in winter, ask the host whether the pool is heated and whether heating costs extra. From May to September the opposite happens: a pool in full sun can get very warm by the afternoon, so a shaded pool or one on the north side of the building is worth asking about.
Truly private, or shared?
“Private pool” should mean the pool belongs to your villa or penthouse alone. Some listings use the phrase for a pool shared by a small building or a cluster of townhouses. Check the photos and the description, and ask if it is not clear whether neighbours can see or use it.
Children and safety
Few holiday-home pools have fences or alarms. If you are travelling with small children, ask whether the pool can be gated, how deep it is and whether pool towels and inflatables are provided. Hotel suites usually have staff on hand; villas rarely do unless you book a housekeeper.

Usually, yes, for the same number of bedrooms, because the pool is smaller and there is no garden or beach. The view from a high terrace is the trade-off you are paying for.
